FD & RD Calculator

Fixed and recurring deposit maturity value and interest, with the TDS check on interest under Section 194A / Section 393.

Last updated · Page maintained by SKAG and Associates · Editorial policy

The FD and RD Calculator works out the maturity value and interest on a fixed deposit (with quarterly, monthly, half-yearly or yearly compounding, or interest paid out) or a recurring deposit (monthly instalments, compounded quarterly). It also checks whether the bank will deduct TDS on the interest: under Section 194A of the 1961 Act and Section 393(1) of the 2025 Act, TDS of 10% applies once interest from one bank or post office in a financial year crosses Rs 50,000, or Rs 1,00,000 for senior citizens.

Banks may round differently, count days instead of months, or use simple interest for short deposits, so the bank's figure can differ slightly. TDS is not a final tax: the interest is added to your income and the TDS is adjusted in your return.

Find what a fixed deposit or recurring deposit will pay at maturity, using the rate your bank or post office quotes. Most banks compound FD interest every quarter; a recurring deposit is compounded quarterly on each monthly instalment. Interest is taxable at your slab rate every year as it accrues, even on a cumulative deposit that pays out only at the end.

  • Which section: Section 194A of the Income-tax Act, 1961 for FY 2025-26; Section 393(1) (Table, Sl. 5) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from Tax Year 2026-27. The thresholds have applied since 1 April 2025.
  • The threshold is checked on the total interest from all your deposits with the same bank (across branches on a core banking system) in the financial year, including interest accrued on cumulative FDs and RDs.
  • If your total income is below the taxable limit, you can give the bank Form 15G (or Form 15H if you are 60 or above) so that no TDS is deducted; from Tax Year 2026-27 both are replaced by Form 121. Check eligibility with the Form 15G/15H checker.
  • Interest on deposits is taxed under “Income from other sources”. In the old regime, senior citizens can deduct up to ₹50,000 of deposit interest under Section 80TTB; others can deduct savings account interest up to ₹10,000 under Section 80TTA. A 5-year tax-saving bank FD qualifies for Section 80C in the old regime.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is FD maturity calculated?
For a cumulative fixed deposit, maturity value = principal x (1 + r/n) raised to n x years, where r is the yearly rate and n is the number of times interest is compounded in a year (4 for quarterly, which most banks use). For example, Rs 1,00,000 at 7% compounded quarterly for 5 years grows to about Rs 1,41,478.
How is recurring deposit interest calculated?
Each monthly instalment earns interest compounded quarterly for the months it stays in the account, and the values are added up. For example, Rs 100 a month for 5 years at 6.7% matures at about Rs 7,137. Banks may round slightly differently.
When does the bank deduct TDS on FD interest?
A bank, co-operative bank or post office deducts TDS at 10% when the interest it pays or credits to you in a financial year, on all your deposits with it together, exceeds Rs 50,000, or Rs 1,00,000 if you are a senior citizen. For other payers such as companies and NBFCs the threshold is Rs 10,000. If PAN is not given, TDS is 20%. This is Section 194A of the 1961 Act and Section 393(1) of the 2025 Act from Tax Year 2026-27.
Is TDS deducted on recurring deposit interest?
Yes. Interest on recurring deposits is treated like fixed deposit interest, so TDS applies once the total interest from the same bank in the year crosses the threshold.
How can I avoid TDS on FD interest?
If your total income is below the taxable limit, you can submit Form 15G (below 60) or Form 15H (60 or above) to the bank at the start of each year; from Tax Year 2026-27 both are replaced by Form 121. Even when no TDS is deducted, the interest must be shown in your return and is taxable at your slab rate.
