Who must register for GST?
Under Section 22 of the CGST Act 2017, every supplier whose aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds the prescribed threshold must register. The current thresholds are:
| Category | Threshold (Normal States) | Threshold (Special States) |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive supply of goods | Rs 40 lakh | Rs 20 lakh |
| Supply of services | Rs 20 lakh | Rs 10 lakh |
| Mixed supply (goods + services) | Rs 20 lakh | Rs 10 lakh |
Special category states for this purpose include Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarakhand and Puducherry.
Mandatory registration regardless of turnover
Several categories require registration under Section 24 even below the threshold. These include:
- Inter-state suppliers of taxable goods (services have exemptions)
- Casual taxable persons making taxable supply
- Persons required to pay tax under reverse charge mechanism (RCM)
- E-commerce operators and persons supplying through e-commerce
- Non-resident taxable persons
- Input service distributors (ISD)
- Persons supplying online information and database access (OIDAR services)
Composition scheme — is it right for you?
Businesses with turnover up to Rs 1.5 crore (Rs 75 lakh for special states) can opt for the Composition Scheme under Section 10. The tax rate is lower (1% for manufacturers/traders, 5% for restaurants, 6% for service providers up to Rs 50 lakh) but with restrictions: no inter-state outward supplies, no input tax credit claim, and compulsory quarterly filing of CMP-08. We help analyse whether composition is more beneficial than the regular scheme for your specific business model.
Timelines
Typical processing time after a complete application is filed:
- Without Aadhaar authentication: Up to 30 working days (physical verification may be required)
- With Aadhaar authentication: 7 working days (no physical verification)
- Deficiency response window: 7 days from notice (REG-03)
Common reasons for rejection
The most frequent reasons GST applications get rejected or held up:
- Address proof mismatch or unclear premises ownership
- Bank account name not matching the legal entity name
- Authorisation letter not signed by all directors/partners
- Wrong business activity code or HSN/SAC selection
- Incomplete additional places of business declaration
Our team has handled hundreds of registrations and pre-vets every document to minimise rejection risk.
Frequently asked questions
Is GST registration mandatory for freelancers and consultants in Delhi? +
GST registration is mandatory once aggregate turnover from services crosses Rs 20 lakh in a financial year. If you supply services to clients outside Delhi (inter-state), registration is mandatory from the first rupee unless the service is exempt or you operate purely through e-commerce platforms covered by Section 9(5).
How long does GST registration take in Delhi? +
With Aadhaar authentication enabled and a complete document set, GSTIN is typically issued within 7 working days. Without Aadhaar authentication, the officer may direct physical verification of the business premises, extending the timeline to 15-30 days.
Can I get GST registration with a residential address? +
Yes — a residential address can be the principal place of business, supported by a recent utility bill (electricity/water/gas) and a No Objection Certificate from the property owner. We help draft a compliant NOC format.
What is the GST registration fee in Delhi? +
There is no government fee for GST registration under the Act. Professional fees vary based on entity type (proprietorship vs company), nature of business and number of locations. Please contact the firm for a quote.
Do I need GST registration if I sell on Amazon, Flipkart or other e-commerce platforms? +
Yes. Under Section 24 of the CGST Act, any person supplying goods through an e-commerce operator (where the operator is required to collect TCS under Section 52) must obtain GST registration regardless of turnover. Service providers on e-commerce platforms covered under Section 9(5) (Ola, Uber, Swiggy, etc.) are exempt up to the normal threshold.
What happens if I don't register for GST despite crossing the threshold? +
Operating without registration when liable attracts penalty under Section 122 of the CGST Act, equal to the tax evaded (subject to a minimum of Rs 10,000) plus interest at 18% per annum on the unpaid tax. Additionally, all your supplies become "supplies without invoice" and recipients lose their input tax credit, damaging business relationships.
