Income Tax · Free, no sign-up · Downloads as an editable Word (.doc) file

Law version: FY 2025-26 (Income-tax Act, 1961); Tax Year 2026-27 onwards (Income-tax Act, 2025). Checked on 26 Sep 2026.

What it is

Employers ask employees at the start of the year to declare the tax-saving investments and deductions they plan to claim, so that monthly TDS can be estimated. The common items are Section 80C (LIC, PPF, EPF, ELSS, tuition fees, home loan principal), 80D (health insurance), 80CCD(1B) (additional NPS), 80E (education loan interest), 80G (donations) and 80TTA (savings interest). From Tax Year 2026-27 these deductions are renumbered as Sections 123 to 153 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, and they are available only under the old tax regime.

The declaration is only a basis for estimating TDS. Actual proofs are submitted later, together with the statement of claims (Form 12BB for FY 2025-26, Form 124 from Tax Year 2026-27). The 80C family limit is ₹1.5 lakh and 80CCD(1B) adds up to ₹50,000. If you choose the new tax regime, these deductions are not allowed, apart from a few such as the employer's NPS contribution. Check the current limits and section numbers on incometax.gov.in.

These deductions are available only under the old tax regime. Section numbers follow the year chosen (80C becomes Section 123 from Tax Year 2026-27).
