DIN basics:
- Who needs DIN: Every individual who is or intends to be a director of a company.
- Eligibility: DIN is allotted only to individuals aged 18 or above, and no one can be appointed a director without a DIN (Section 152(3)). Section 164 disqualifications bar appointment as a director.
- Documents: PAN, Aadhaar (for Indians), passport (mandatory for foreigners), proof of address.
- How to apply: Through SPICe+ Part B during incorporation (up to 3 proposed directors) or DIR-3 (for directors of an existing company).
- One DIN per person: Lifetime; valid across all directorships.
- DIR-3 KYC Web once every three financial years, due by 30 June (from 31 March 2026, G.S.R. 943(E) dated 31 December 2025); existing DIN holders with KYC complete are next due by 30 June 2028.
DSC (Digital Signature Certificate):
- Type required: Class 3 DSC for MCA filings.
- Validity: Typically 1-3 years.
- Issued by: A licensed Certifying Authority; charges vary by provider and validity period.
- For foreigners: Apostilled / Hague-Convention-notarised PAN/passport required.

Who can get a DIN in India?
Any individual aged 18 or above who is or intends to be a director of a company can obtain a Director Identification Number, provided they are not disqualified under Section 164 of the Companies Act, 2013. Indian citizens, NRIs, OCIs and foreign nationals are all eligible. One DIN is allotted per person for life and is valid across all directorships.
What documents are needed for DIN and DSC?
Indian applicants usually need PAN, Aadhaar or another identity proof, a recent address proof such as a utility bill, and a photograph. Foreign nationals need an apostilled or notarised copy of their passport along with address proof. A Class 3 DSC is obtained first, and DIN is then applied for through SPICe+ during incorporation or DIR-3 for an existing company.
How does the DIN eligibility checker work?
The tool checks three things: your age, your nationality and whether any listed Section 164 disqualification applies, such as being an undischarged insolvent, a relevant conviction, or being a director of a company that has not filed its financial statements or annual returns for three continuous years.
