Stamp duty, registration and filing
A relieving letter is issued on company letterhead and needs no stamp duty. The Code on Wages, 2019 requires wages due to an employee who resigns to be paid within two working days, so plan the full and final settlement alongside the relieving letter.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a relieving letter and an experience certificate?
A relieving letter confirms that the employee has been released from duties on a particular date. An experience certificate describes the period of service, role and conduct. Many employers issue both.
Can an employer refuse a relieving letter?
Employers usually issue it after the notice period and handover. If an employee leaves without serving notice as agreed, the employer may hold back the letter until dues are settled, subject to the terms of employment.
When should the relieving letter be issued?
Normally on the last working day, or soon after once clearances are completed.
