Offer letters are signed on company letterhead and do not need stamp paper. Since 21 November 2025, when the labour codes came into force, the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 requires employers to issue an appointment letter to every employee on appointment, so issue a detailed appointment letter on joining as well. The salary structure should also be checked against the definition of wages in the Code on Wages, 2019.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an offer letter and an appointment letter?
An offer letter proposes employment on key terms before joining. An appointment letter confirms the appointment after joining and sets out detailed terms and conditions of service.
Can an employer withdraw an offer letter?
An offer can generally be withdrawn before it is accepted. After acceptance, withdrawal may lead to a dispute depending on the terms and circumstances, so conditions should be stated clearly in the letter.
Should the offer letter show the salary breakup?
The offer letter usually shows the annual CTC. A detailed breakup is typically attached or given with the appointment letter; the salary structure builder on this site can help prepare one.
