Frequently Asked Questions

What is the late fee for filing ITR after the due date?
Under Section 234F, the fee for filing an income tax return after the due date is Rs 5,000, reduced to Rs 1,000 if total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh. From Tax Year 2026-27, the corresponding provision is Section 428 of the Income Tax Act, 2025. Interest under Sections 234A and 234B may also apply on unpaid tax.
What is the last date to file a belated return?
A belated return can be filed up to 31 December of the relevant assessment year under Section 139(4), which corresponds to Section 263(4) from Tax Year 2026-27. For FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), that is 31 December 2026. A belated return attracts the Section 234F fee and interest on any tax that remains unpaid. After 31 December 2026 a return for AY 2026-27 can only be filed as an updated return (ITR-U) under Section 139(8A), which must increase the tax payable and carries additional tax of 25% to 70%. Separately, the Finance Act 2026 allows a revised return up to 31 March 2027 for AY 2026-27, with a fee under Section 234-I if revised after 31 December 2026.
How does the late fee and interest calculator work?
Enter total income, tax liability, tax already paid, the filing date and the applicable due date for AY 2026-27. If the return is late, the tool applies the Section 234F fee, then charges 1% per month or part of a month on unpaid tax under Section 234A from the due date, and under Section 234B from 1 April 2026 where less than 90% of tax was paid in advance. It is an estimate; advance tax paid is not split by date.
