GSTIN & PAN Format Validator
Check a GSTIN or PAN offline: state code, embedded PAN, entity type and the mod-36 check digit.
The GSTIN and PAN Format Validator checks whether a 15-character GSTIN or a 10-character PAN is correctly formed and explains each part: the state code, the embedded PAN and its entity type, the entity number, the 14th character and the check digit. The GSTIN check digit is recomputed with the mod-36 method. The check runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere; it does not confirm that a registration is active, which only the GST portal can show.
Use the GSTIN & PAN Format Validator
Spaces are ignored and letters are read as capitals. 10 characters are checked as a PAN, 14 as a GSTIN without its check digit, and 15 as a GSTIN.
Format Check
Check the format of a GSTIN (15 characters) or a PAN (10 characters) before you use it on an invoice, in a TDS statement or in your books. Enter 14 characters of a GSTIN to see what its check digit should be. This is an offline format check: a GSTIN can be correctly formed and still be cancelled or suspended, so confirm the status with Search Taxpayer on the GST portal.

- Characters 3–12: the PAN of the business (for a tax deductor registration, the TAN).
- Character 13: entity number: 1 for the first registration on that PAN in the state, then 2–9 and A–Z for further registrations.
- Character 14: Z by default for normal registrations.
- Character 15: check character computed from the first 14 (see below).

Each of the first 14 characters is given a value (0–9 for digits, 10–35 for A–Z) and multiplied by 1 and 2 alternately, starting with 1. Each product is split into its quotient and remainder on division by 36, and all of these are added. The check value is (36 − the sum's remainder on division by 36), taken modulo 36, written back as a digit or letter.
