What it is
An affidavit is a written statement of facts that the deponent confirms on oath or affirmation before a Notary or Oath Commissioner. It ends with a verification in which the deponent confirms that the contents are true to their knowledge and belief.
When it is used
- Name change, or a difference in names or dates across documents.
- Address or residence proof, and passport or ration card applications.
- Declarations asked for by an employer, university or government office.

Stamp duty, registration and filing
The stamp paper value needed for an affidavit depends on the State and on the purpose; ask the office you are submitting it to. The affidavit must be signed in front of the Notary or Oath Commissioner, who attests it. Making a false statement on oath is a punishable offence.
