GSTR-9 vs Books Reconciliation Working
Reconcile turnover, input tax credit and tax paid as per your books with the GST annual return, item by item.
What it is
Differences between the books of account and GST returns are common: unbilled revenue, advances, credit notes recorded in a different period, exempt or non-GST income, and ITC differences between the purchase register, GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B. This working lists the reconciling items for turnover, ITC and tax, so that the annual return and, where applicable, GSTR-9C can be filed correctly and any additional tax paid.

Frequently asked questions
Why do books and GST returns differ?
Common reasons are timing of invoices and credit notes, advances, unbilled revenue, non-GST income and errors in earlier returns.
Is this reconciliation filed on the portal?
No. It supports the figures in GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C and is kept on record.
What if ITC in books is more than in GSTR-2B?
ITC can generally be claimed only if it appears in GSTR-2B and the other conditions are met. The difference should be investigated with suppliers.
